Position Title: Ecologist Mid Level

Position Location: Columbus, OH

Salary Range: $50,000 - $65,000

Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Ecologist Mid Level to support projects in our Environmental and Ecological Client Service Group. Projects may include wetland and surface water assessments and delineations, Clean Water Act permitting (Section 401/404), compliance and audit programs, environmental assessments (EA/EIS), funding and implementation strategies, Phase I and II site assessments, remediation and restoration planning/design/oversight, and material reuse regulation and permitting.

As a Ecologist Mid Level at Environmental Design Group you will:

  • Complete wetland and surface water delineation and quality assessments and reporting
  • Assist with Federal and State waterway permitting and agency coordination
  • Provide environmental field observation during construction near and within boundaries of wetlands, streams, or other environmentally sensitive areas or habitats.
  • Document on-site compliance with the conditions of environmental permits, prepare weekly status reports.
  • Collect GIS data, prepare figures using ArcMap, and write technical reports
  • Support the growth and development of our Ecological/Environmental services in Central Ohio
  • Identify and refer new business opportunities by developing and maintaining positive relationships with existing and prospective clients and participating in client events and industry associations.
  • Demonstrate technical competency in areas of project development.
  • Adhere to and train Associates on all quality and safety protocols.
  • Actively engage in assigned projects including preparing proposals, project planning documents, and budgets; designing systems for projects using manual techniques and computer programs; calculating and checking project quantities and cost estimates; preparing applications for project permitting and coordinating approvals with regulatory agencies; monitoring project budgets, reporting results to the project manager, identifying and developing strategies to complete the project within budget; recommending project plan changes when needed; assisting with construction observation to ensure work is in compliance with design specifications; preparing reports for distribution to management, clients, and reviewing agencies; serving as assistant project manager as needed; maintaining contact with clients, regulatory agencies, and other outside groups as delegated by project manager.
  • Collaborate and regularly communicate with Project Manager and other project staff on status of work, deliverables, schedule, and budgets; supervise the work of other professionals to complete project documentation, provide basic direction and input, monitor quality, and ensure on-time completion of work.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with existing and prospective clients; participate in client events, community boards and organizations and industry associations; participate in public meetings including the delivery of presentations as requested.


Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors Degree in Biology, Ecology, or related
  • Experience: 3-10 years
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, ArcMap, use of Trimble or similar GPS equipment, and other industry-based software is required
  • Training in wetland delineation familiarity with Ohio flora
  • Knowledge of state and federal wetland and RTE species regulations and coordination requirements
  • Construction observation experience, with utility/linear project experience preferred
  • Enthusiasm for field work with capability of outdoor activity, including hiking over rough terrain and ability to lift and carry 25 pounds
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaborative team settings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent data collection and time management skills
  • Self-starter, independent worker
  • Valid driver's license


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Part-time or contract-labor work may be considered for the right candidate. Occasional evening work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, but travel may extend to 25% out of town during work weeks depending upon job and project requirements.

Supervisor Responsibility

This position does not supervise any staff.
