AECOM is seeking a Laboratory Intern for it's Treatability Study Laboratory located in Austin, TX.

This position is expected to begin in May 2021.

We provide advisory and technical services to help clients cleanup and close contaminated sites and surplus operational facilities and restore them for reuse, plan and permit new facilities, address critical climate change issues, restore habitats and water quality, protect natural and cultural resources, maintain compliance, and cost effectively manage residuals and wastes.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Ion chromatography: Nitrate, sulfate, chloride, organic acids
  • Gas chromatography (FID and TCD detection): VOCs and gases
  • Atomic absorption (metals)
  • Mercury analysis
  • UV-VIS spectrophotometry: reduced iron, reduced anthraquinone disulfonic acid (AQDS), protein, hexavalent chromium
  • Soil oxidant demand test
  • Total organic carbon (TOC)
  • pH, ORP, DO, specific conductivity, temperature, and turbidity

Minimum Requirements
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Life-Sciences or related degree
  • Due to the nature of the job, U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Completion of first year of qualified study

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in working in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of best laboratory practices
  • Basic knowledge of hazardous materials/waste handling
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and document laboratory activities
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and microbiology principles
  • Willingness to adhere to safety culture
  • Experience with or knowledge of Chem Station
  • Experience conducting research: experimental design and setup, data entry and plotting
  • Experience working with a fume-hood and handling of volatile organic compounds
  • Experience working with an anaerobic chamber
  • Experience working with bacteria cultures
  • Knowledge on soil and geotechnical principles
  • Local candidates preferred
  • Experience working with analytical instrumentation:
  • Gas Chromatography
  • UV-VIS
  • pH/ORP/DO
