Under the guidance of the Plant Manager, this position is responsible for the environmental, health and safety processes at the Millwood, WV Mineral Wool Manufacturing Facility. This includes creating and implementing effective strategies that enable the manufacturing, maintenance, and support staff operations of the plant to achieve their EH&S performance objectives. This leadership role is accountable for developing, implementing, sustaining, auditing, and improving necessary management systems for assigned areas in accordance with Company guidelines and in alignment with the plant's vision, mission, principles, and values.

What you'll be doing:
  • Leading the plant in achieving a sustainable safety culture through effective implementation of the plant's safety processes and initiatives. Focused on risk and incident reduction, compliance, case management and safety system effectiveness (i.e., Safety Leading Indicators, risk assessment, near miss/good catch, plant safety training, safety conversations, audits, and training processes.)
  • Ensuring compliance with WVDEP, EPA, OSHA, Armstrong EHS policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Providing functional knowledge of key OSHA regulations and industry standards (i.e.: record keeping, confined space, energy isolation, machine safeguarding, powered industrial trucks, electrical safety, hazardous communications, and industrial hygiene monitoring)
  • Providing functional knowledge of key EPA and WV environmental regulations and industry standards (i.e. air, waste, wastewater, stormwater, etc.)
  • Working with business unit, plant floor, and leadership teams to identify and implement safety and health improvement opportunities based on employee feedback, observations, best practices, and data trends.
  • Providing effective leadership and project management for specific projects, initiatives, and business processes needed to drive environmental and safety performance.
  • Developing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines. Ensure adequate recordkeeping and report filing for compliance.
  • Interfacing with regulatory agencies, committee members and staff to formulate corrective actions.
  • Monitoring all current information on regulations and requirements related to hazardous materials and agents.
  • Investigating and evaluating new equipment and ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place.
  • Supporting Armstrong sustainability initiatives
  • Executing the plant strategic and operating plans to ensure environmental and safety compliance while improving overall operating results.
  • Interacting effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Providing urgent response to operational issues 24/7 which includes environmental upset conditions and case management of safety incidents.
  • Providing leadership and project management for specific projects, initiatives and business processes needed to drive environmental and safety performance.
  • Developing and managing budgets for safety and environmental activities including safety supplies, safety recognition, consulting and testing plus waste removal and fees.


What will make you successful:
  • BS degree or equivalent work experience in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Management, Engineering or a closely-related field.
  • 3+ years of applied EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with environmental permitting (particularly air permitting), recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Experience with the creation, administration and implementation of safety programs is required (including SOP's, JSA's, Ergonomics).
  • Experience with Behavior Based Safety principles.
  • Experience in safety training development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated project management skills on moderately complex projects.
  • Highly effective communication and data organization skills.
  • Incident Investigation expertise including Root Cause Analysis and/or Five Why Analysis.
  • Project management and team facilitation skills.
  • Proven training and development experience.
  • Intermediate level of computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


Preferred qualifications:
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification.
  • General Industrial Hygiene knowledge is required with sampling experience.
  • Experience leading safety culture improvement.
  • Case management experience with workers compensation programs.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean and/or other process improvement methods.
  • Ability to access and work with data sets from multiple sources (such as Data Historian, Infinity, Microsoft Access, SAP) is preferred to identify opportunities and accurately assess situations.
