JOB TITLE: Environmental Specialist I, II, SR
Location: North Fort Myers, Florida

Work hours: 7am - 4:00 pm M-F

We are searching for a Environmental Specialist to join our Environmental Health & Safety department.

Position Summary: The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist is responsible to ensure that LCEC policies and practices comply with all applicable Federal, State and Local regulations in addition to the implementation of organizational EH&S policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting Job Safety Analysis (JSA), field and facilities safety compliance audits, coordinating/ assisting with environmental programs, safety training, participating in safety related meetings, assisting with incident investigations and providing periodic field compliance reports to the EHS Program Manager. The EH&S Specialist will play a key role in driving engagement in a safety culture at LCEC.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Must be proficient and knowledgeable of RCRA, EPRCRA, CERCLA, and TSCA.
  • Must have working knowledge of Hazardous & Universal waste management protocols.
  • Must have working knowledge in SPCCs and SWPPPs.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture at all levels of the organization with a particular focus on employee engagement with safety.
  • Identify needs, develop and coordinate EH&S programs to ensure the organization adheres to applicable Federal, State and Local regulations to include, but not limited to, EPA, OSHA and DOT regulations, as well as company policies and safety best practices.
  • Develop and deliver effective EH&S training programs that satisfy legal requirements, eliminates workplace accidents/ incidents and reinforces a safety mindset throughout the organization.
  • Coordinate and conduct safety audits, safety equipment inspections, compliance audits, Job Safety Analysis, risk assessments, root cause investigations and effect counter-measures.
  • Conduct Industrial Hygiene assessments (e.g. ergonomics, air sampling, noise audits etc.) to analyze and interpret data from employees and work environments.
  • Coordinate and implement environmental programs as directed by the EH&S Program Manager to include ensuring that programs are both functional and compliant with regulatory requirements as well as assist with hazardous waste analysis, inspections and reports.
  • Attend, lead and/or facilitate joint safety committee meetings; educate the committee on safety related best practices; provide practical and technical expertise advice and solutions.
  • Provide emergency response to incidents or potential hazards to include accident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Strongly support emergency response, storm restoration and business continuity initiatives.
  • Strongly support safety program monitoring to include records maintenance and management; scheduling; material distribution, report writing and safety metrics monitoring and assist in the maintenance of various EHS databases.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and customers at all levels within LCEC. Ensure smooth operations, productive communications, and effective understanding during all interpersonal contacts. Provide current and accurate information to all requesters, courteously and in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications Environmental Specialist I:
  • Associates Degree in Safety or equivalent combination of experience & education
  • Minimum two (2) years' safety experience
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations & safety best practices
  • Effective communications skills (verbal and written)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated teaching and presentation skills
  • Proficient in MS Office Products to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with utmost discretion
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Florida driver's license (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Excellent driving record

Desired Qualifications Environmental Specialist I:
  • Previous experience in the electric utility industry
  • Formal Health & Safety Training

Required Qualifications Environmental Specialist II:

In addition to the requirements of Spec/Environmentalist I
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or related field or equivalent combination of experience & education
  • Five (5) years' Safety experience
  • Possess a recognized Safety Professional designation (e.g., ASP, ASHM, CUSP, or CESCP)
  • Documented experience in conducting tailboard meetings, Job Safety Analysis (JSAs), Health & Safety training, compliance audits and writing EHS reports

Desired Qualifications Environmental Specialist II:
  • Possess Registered Environmental Professional (REP) Certification
  • Possess Certified Waste Management Professional (CWMP) Certification
  • Possess Maintenance of Traffic (Intermediate Level) Qualification
  • Previous experience in the electric utility industry
  • Ability to focus and multitask under stringent timelines

Required Qualifications Environmental Specialist Sr:

In addition to the "Required" Qualifications Specialist II:
  • Eight (8) years' safety experience
  • Possess a recognized Safety Professional designation (e.g., CSP, CSHM)

Desired Qualifications Environmental Specialist Sr:
  • Master's Degree in Safety or related field
  • Ten (10) years' Safety experience in the Electrical industry

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and travel throughout LCEC service territory
  • Ability to be on-call 24 hours a day
  • Ability to lift and carry moderate weight up to 50 pounds on occasion
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in adverse weather conditions and on uneven terrain
  • Ability to perform position responsibilities while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time at a desk/computer terminal
  • Ability to view computer monitor from a reasonable distance
  • Ability to work long hours for an extended period of time in the event of emergency restoration

Work Environment:
  • Approximately 60% of the time will be spent in the field in all types of weather. The other 40% will be spent indoors in environmentally controlled office.
