Senior Scientist in Cell & Molecular Biology

We are seeking a Senior Scientist in Cell and Molecular Biology to join an interdisciplinary R&D team focusing on developing the first tools for massively parallel, integrated single cell phenotyping and genomics at the company's headquarters in San Carlos, CA.

The cell and molecular biologist will be responsible for developing novel sample preparation techniques for analyzing the transcriptional and genetic profiles of single cells in a high-throughput manner. The scientist will conduct R&D projects on various cell types and will work with external partners in academia and industry to pilot independent projects that validate these new approaches and enable new types of scientific questions to be asked.

Responsibilities

• Develop molecular biology approaches for single cells
  
• Develop methods for long-duration phenotyping assays of various cell types inside microfluidic chips
  
• Develop and troubleshoot phenotyping workflows including those analyzing single cell drug responses and cell-cell interactions
  
• Develop and troubleshoot molecular biology workflows including cDNA synthesis, PCR, and primer design.
  
• Develop and troubleshoot bioinformatics methods to analyze the sequencing results.
  
• Work closely with a cross-functional team consisting of biologists, engineers and data scientists.

RequirementsRequired Skills

• Recent M. S. or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology with 2+ years of relevant experience in a research or industry setting
  
• Strong experience with molecular biology techniques: RT, PCR and NGS library preparation including RNA-seq and/or DNA-seq
  
• Use of molecular biology techniques with low sample inputs, such as single cells.
  
• Experience with NGS sequencing platforms including Illumina sequencing.
  
• Ability to work in a fast paced start-up work environment with ability to adjust workload based upon changing priorities
  
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills to clearly articulate ideas, protocols and concepts with biologists, engineers and non-scientists.
  
• Familiarity with tools to analyze NGS data and the ability to perform data management functions in Python or SQL not required, but will be given priority
  

Desired Skills & Experience

• Experience with mammalian cell culture and protein expression systems
  
• Experience with gene editing and related methods
  
• Experience with cell based assays with image-based fluorescent readouts
  
• Experience with RNA-seq with limited samples.
  
• Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills to work well with scientists and engineers having widely divergent backgrounds.
