The MITRE Corporation's Emerging Engineering and Physical Sciences Department is seeking a Senior Principal Environmental Economist to support multiple projects solving our customers' most critical environmental security challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in the intersection of emerging technologies and economic impacts across its diverse membership. The department is looking to strengthen its focus on environmental security and climate resilience by adding senior leaders who can help address national-level problems by conducting research, evaluating the impact of emerging tech solutions, and assessing the regulatory and policy environment to remove barriers to adoption and transition. The position will join a technically diverse and collegial team with other economists, energy and environmental engineers, public health scientists, systems engineers, remote sensing analysts and computer scientists. Necessary skills for this position include risk modeling, econometric analysis, handling and manipulating large data sets, and communicating complex qualitative and quantitative economic concepts effectively. Expect a multi-disciplinary team environment with self-motivated, highly trained professionals. This is a project-oriented position that also requires project management, collaboration, communicating to technical and non-technical audiences, and direct sponsor engagement
The successful candidate will have:
- Extensive experience addressing and engaging with international, national, state and local partners in exemplary climate innovation efforts (e.g., renewable energy solutions [solar and wind], green financing levers at state and local levels, insurance markets for climate risk, smart cities, low carbon economic models, clean technology pathways, environmental justice, emissions reduction, sustainable agriculture and production, decision metrics and finance, sustainable supply chains, etc.)
- A strong research focus, including relevant recent technical publications
- A proven track record of leadership developing strategic partnerships and actionable strategies with demonstrable outcomes to promote evidence-based decision-making pertaining to climate innovation
Responsibilities include:
- Key functions include developing models and performing qualitative and quantitative analyses to understand the economic impact of environmental risk mitigation strategies, options and other government actions
- Engaging with senior customers to advise and recommend economic metrics, tools, and policies that result in sustainable solutions
- Developing strategic external partnerships to further the scope and depth of applied research and research outcomes
- Leading transdisciplinary technical teams in the economic modeling of integration and/or deployment challenges associated with technology or financing innovations through analytical, experimental, or model-based assessment
- Performing systems-level evaluations of strategies to evaluate their impact on the client's ability to meet resilience goals
Required Qualifications:
- Deep technical expertise in one or more sub-specialties (e.g., green tech, digital agriculture, market valuation including renewable energy technologies, optimization of agricultural systems, water resource security)
- Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills
- The ability to design and conduct research of climate risk assessment and mitigation strategies in a collaborative, transdisciplinary environment
- The ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. and 10 years or MS and 15 years of relevant experience in one of the following areas: Environmental economics, resource management, agricultural economics, climate financing strategies and/or policy development, clean energy/ energy efficiency, carbon markets
- Extensive experience and expertise, including recent publications, in developing risk management models
- Strong credentials, recognition, and partnerships in the design and evaluation of policies and strategies to advance climate solutions at scale
- Experience in finance
- Recognized expertise and professional network in environmental economics
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS and 15 years related experience
