The mission of the Biosciences Division is to conduct multidisciplinary research on fundamental biological processes focusing on environmental microbiology, microbial communities and dynamics, and microbial evolution. Underlying this is an emphasis on the control, management and evolution of information in biological systems and how to manipulate that information enabling important advances in environmental protection and remediation, energy production and sustainability, and human health and welfare.
We invite you to apply for a postdoctoral appointee position to help understand how naturally occurring communities of microorganisms respond to changes in their environment that will also inform subsequent environmental fate and transport modeling efforts. You will explore these topics alongside other members of the Biosciences team and computational scientists in the Computing, Environment and Life Sciences Directorate as well as other university collaborators.
Develops and applies environmental microbiology techniques to study dynamics of naturally occurring microbial communities over time. Develops and applies microcosm-based approaches in the laboratory to test impact of multiple environmental conditions. Applies computational approaches to metagenomic-derived experimental data in order to monitor changes in microbial community composition and responses to environmental perturbations. Participates in interdisciplinary discussions aimed at the design of new experiments. Reports on results of research including publishing scholarly papers in scientific journals, giving presentations at conferences, meetings, and seminars. Participates in the preparation of reports and proposals required by funding agencies to obtain and continue funding support.
- PhD and 0-3 years of experience in biological sciences, environmental sciences, bioinformatics or a related field.
- Considerable knowledge and skills in either environmental microbiology or environmental science, demonstrated work in soil-based systems preferred
- Considerable knowledge and skills in bioinformatics analysis techniques and tools (demonstrated work with microbial ecology analysis software preferred)
- Familiarity with microbial genomic and metagenomic data analysis tools
- Experience processing NGS DNA sequence data
- Familiarity with command line tools
- Familiarity with machine learning and/or statistics preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required
- Ability to think independently and innovatively to develop exceptional technical solutions required
- Good verbal and written communication skills required
- Ability to write research reports and publications required
- Organizational skills and attention to detail required
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team required
- Considerable collaborative skills, including the ability to interact well with external collaborators preferred
