Biologist / Wetland Ecologist
POWER Engineers' Environmental Division provides planning, permitting, engineering, site assessment and corrective action services to clients worldwide. Across multiple industries, our diverse staff specialize in the areas of air, water, waste, ecological and cultural resources throughout our 45 offices located across the country and internationally.
POWER is seeking a Biologist / Wetland Ecologist to join our Environmental Practice working out of our offices in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Virginia offices, however, the location of position is somewhat flexible.
This Biologist / Wetland Ecologist will assist with field assessments for wetland and ecological projects located across the country, with a particular focus in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Southeastern United States. This position includes a mixture of field and office duties. It is likely to require long days outdoors in variable weather and terrain at times, as well as supporting reporting, business, and organizational development. Our projects often require short-term travel and occasionally working long weeks. Candidates must have positive attitudes, be physically prepared to work outside in remote locations, and be eager to become an integral part of the dynamic POWER team.
Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
- Completing wetland and waterbody delineations
- Identifying protected plant species
- Conducting habitat assessments or rare wildlife species surveys
- Organizing field-collected data and compiling survey reports
- Implementing health and safety plans, coordinating their schedule with the team, and interfacing with both internal staff (project managers, engineers, and other discipline leads) as well as client representatives and other project team members
- Assisting our clients to develop and implement successful survey and natural resource permitting strategies and coordinate with agency staff when needed
- Developing as an ecologist as well as support our standards and implementing quality assurance and safety measures
- Being knowledgeable in ecology and interested in developing technical skills for ecological survey and environmental permitting tasks
The candidate should have an established and successful history of performing wetland delineations, working as part of diverse and dynamic project teams and be looking for opportunities for growth through gaining new skills
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or another related field
- Over five (5+) years of experience conducting ecological surveys and supporting natural resource permit development
- Strong analytical, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to quality with solid attention to detail and organizing data and reports
- Interest in developing and sharing botanical and ecological knowledge
- Knowledge of the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual and appropriate regional supplements
- Basic understanding of Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting and Endangered Species Act (ESA) regulations
- Experience in writing and managing the preparation of technical reports or permit applications
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- Must be willing and able to travel throughout the region with potential for travel throughout the U.S.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Experience with a variety of biological and GPS data collection systems
- Solid written and oral communication skills
- Task or Project Management experience
- Experience in botany and/or advanced botanical inventory experience
- Experience with CWA Section 402 construction stormwater permitting and/or environmental construction inspection
- Experience with Floristic Quality Assessments or other vegetative assessments a plus
- Experience organizing complex field survey efforts for transmission line, pipeline, or renewable energy projects a plus
