We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate to support Akebia's internal research on the biology of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and other novel emerging targets. As an integral Team member, you will contribute to the identification and development of novel small molecules for clinical translation. In this position, you will use cellular and molecular techniques and procedures, and will design, execute and analyze experiments that test hypotheses and probe mechanism of action. You will be a technical leader at the bench, supporting and executing Akebia's research strategy. You will work independently and as part of a Team, interacting with team members through oral and written presentation of data.

Required Skills
  • Develop internal research capabilities to support drug discovery and small molecule characterization for pipeline development
  • Establish, execute and analyze biochemical, molecular and cell-based assays critical to project objectives
  • Employ automation techniques for cellular and/or biochemical evaluation of novel small molecules, such as: high-content screening; transcriptional analyses; protein and nucleic acid biomarker quantitation; FRET, chemiluminescence, fluorescence biochemical assays; immunohistochemical assays
  • Work closely with other biologists and chemists on project teams aimed at small molecule drug discovery and early development
  • Interact as part of the Research Team with Contract Research Organizations (CROs) for project advancement.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in electronic laboratory notebooks, databases and/or spreadsheets for all experiments performed
  • Contribute to the writing, publishing and presentation of major scientific findings
  • Other duties as needed or required.


Required Experience

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science with 5+ years industry experience OR M.S. in related discipline and 2 years industry experience.
  • Experience with small molecule drug development.
  • Hands-on experience in the independent design and execution of experiments
  • Experience with high throughput screening, liquid handing equipment and instrumentation
  • Hands-on experience with in vitro approaches, including mammalian cell culture, protein and nucleic acid extraction, western blot, ELISA, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, MSD platform-based assays, microscopy


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track record of advancing Drug Discovery programs
  • Excellent communication, multitasking, problem solving and collaboration skills. Strong attention to detail.
  • Contributions to patent applications, regulatory filings, and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals is desirable
  • No relocation available for this role and this role will require someone to be in the office
