Job Posting: Junior or Senior Metallurgist

Company Overview

The process chemistry used to make products like cement has not changed in nearly 200 years. Cement's CO2 emissions account for 8% of total global emissions (the same as cars!) and must be eliminated if we are to mitigate climate change. It is time for better chemistry.

Brimstone Inc, is a Clean Tech Energy company revolutionizing cement-making with a patented new chemical process that eliminates all of the emissions from cement. The company is venture backed and a Caltech-spinout that has been awarded funding from ARPA-E and Cyclotron road.

This person will be joining a powerful, diverse team and they need to be ready to scale the movement that will ensure the well-being of the next generation. We promote a dynamic team effort where each voice is heard. You will be working with a team chemists and other metallurgists to solve key problems in cement production.

We are looking for an individual with 0-3 (junior) or 3+ (senior) years of extractive metallurgy experience. The metallurgist will be responsible for building, operating, and optimizing our miniplant which makes clean cement. Additional responsibilities include conducting research on process improvements.

Our Brimstone Team and Board are a passionate group with deep experience in mining, chemistry, metallurgy, cement, clean tech, and project finance.

Cody Finke, PhD, CEO. - Cody received his PhD in environmental science and engineering in 2020 at Caltech under professor Michael Hoffmann where he studied catalysts for the CO2-free production of various commodities including hydrogen, sulfuric acid, cement, and chlorine. After his PhD, Cody joined Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as a Cyclotron Road Entrepreneurial Post-doctoral Scholar. Cody is the co-founder and CEO of Brimstone Energy, a venture-backed company which is oriented towards industrial decarbonization of cement and other commodities.

Hugo Leandri, COO. - Hugo earned his Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Icam in France and was a visiting student under Prof. Michael Hoffmann at Caltech. During his master thesis, Hugo worked on a monitoring system for an innovative wastewater treatment technology for low-income countries. After graduating, Hugo was hired by Prof. Hoffmann as a staff scientist to work on a novel electrochemical system for household-scale wastewater treatment. Hugo's work has received several accolades including being honored as an invited speaker at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Reinvented Toilet Exposition in Beijing, China.

Marcelo de Olivera, PhD, VP of Geology and Materials Science - Marcelo worked as a CTO for an agritech startup and he has been in the mining/agri/tech industry for more than 10 years. He is passionated about learning and developing people with different skills in projects to build a better world. Marcelo earned his PhD in geology and geochemistry (2009), had a post doc experience in petrology and thermodynamics at Université d'Orleans (2010), and in Materials science and engineering at MIT (2016).

Evody Tshijik Karumb, PhD, Senior Metallurgical Research Engineer - Evody is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C.), and she came to the United States in 2009 to pursue education. She first attended Red Rocks Community College for two years, then transferred to the Colorado School of Mines where she obtained her BS degree in December 2013. Evody continued on with an MS where she investigated the recovery of indium from mining wastes, and she earned her degree in December 2016. She pushed a little further and enrolled in the PhD program where she investigated the fundamentals of vacuum distillation, its predictions, and laboratory scale testing in regard to refining of complex lead bullion under Prof. Patrick Taylor and with the support of Dr. Corby Anderson. Evody earned her degree in December 2019 and volunteered at Mines assisting graduate students before joining Brimstone Energy in September 2020.
