Assistant/Associate Professor positions at OSU

Oregon State University (OSU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) are pleased to announce the availability of two, jointly supported, collaborative, OSU faculty positions to be based at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. These positions are part of OSU's ongoing commitment to leadership in marine-related research, education, and outreach and engagement, including in support of the Marine Studies Initiative. The successful candidates will work in collaboration with OSU and NOAA scientists to advance understanding of the role of the physical and biogeochemical ocean environment on the population dynamics, behavior, survival, and adaptation of managed and protected marine species in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem, with applicability to other systems and species. They will also support the NWFSC Estuarine and Ocean Ecology Program's mission through direct involvement in research projects important to the NWFSC and increase collaboration between OSU and the NWFSC. The faculty members will participate in teaching, and student and postdoc mentorship in support of OSU's Marine Studies Initiative.

One position, an Ecosystem Oceanographer (Posting number: P04290UF), is open at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank and will have an academic home in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. The primary research focus for this position is in understanding how interactions between physical, biological, and chemical processes shape the response of the coastal marine ecosystems, and adaptations of marine organisms, from planktonic to mid- and higher trophic level species (e.g., forage fish and apex predators). This position will focus on developing and implementing state-of-the-art biogeochemical modeling tools for investigating these questions. The research will generate new mechanistic insights for how ocean change - such as deoxygenation, acidification, and marine heat waves - affect the distribution, population dynamics, and adaptive capacity of commercially, culturally, and ecologically important species. For further information about and to apply for this position see URL: https://jobs.oregonstate.edu/postings/99953

Another position, an Ocean Ecologist, is open at the Assistant Professor rank and will have an academic home in OSU's Department of Fish and Wildlife in the College of Agricultural Sciences, and will be affiliated with either the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station or the Marine Mammal Institute depending on expertise. The general aim for this position is to examine the trophic ecology among marine species with an emphasis on top-down controls in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The primary research interest for this position is in the mechanistic links between upper trophic-level predators and marine food webs with a focus on managed and protected species. The position could take advantage of novel technologies such as fisheries acoustics, biologging tags, and oceanographic data paired with spatial statistics, food web, or individual-based models to examine predator influence on trophic ecology. The qualified candidate could participate in projects such as NOAA's salmon and ecosystem surveys, and animal telemetry efforts, aiding in both data collection and analysis. For further information about and to apply for this position see URL. https://jobs.oregonstate.edu/postings/100017

The successful candidates will hold tenure-track faculty positions at OSU and will occupy laboratory and office space in OSU's new Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building in Newport, Oregon, and have access to NOAA facilities and research support. The faculty member will be expected to a) conduct and maintain nationally and internationally recognized research activities that are relevant to NOAA priorities, b) teach graduate and undergraduate courses commensurate with the teaching responsibilities, c) mentor undergraduate, graduate students, and post-docs, and d) conduct service activities to the institution and profession.

OSU maintains an institution‐wide commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and community, and seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce and student body that includes members of historically underrepresented groups. We strive to build and sustain a welcoming and supportive campus environment.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by May 21, 2021.
