The Senior Director, Integrative Sciences - Tumor Microenvironment (TME) occupies a critical interface between Research and Early Development (R&ED), Business Development (BD), Global Alliance Management (AM), and BMS's collaborations with the biotech community. The major effort will be to evaluate and forge new collaborations, especially in novel areas of breaking science, primarily towards targeting the Tumor Microenvironment to treat cancer. In addition, the individual will lead existing external partnerships. The ideal candidate will be expected to be an active member in the governance committees for relevant external collaborations, as well as sit on leadership committees for internal programs to ensure alignment of our combined portfolio of cutting-edge programs. The individual will interface closely with the Leadership of the Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TRC) located in Redwood City, CA and partner with the BD organization and Global Alliance Management in the creation of and running the collaborations.
Elements of the position:
- Communicate strategic priorities of the TME TRC to the appropriate BD group
- Develop and execute a plan for external corporate collaborations that extend and provide adjacent opportunities complementing the internal pipeline for the TME TRC
- Contribute to the design and implementation of external R&ED strategy via corporate and biotech collaborations
- Scientific advisor for the construction of the collaboration contract - done in close collaboration with BD lead
- Scientific management of the collaboration and relationship
- Ambassador for Science at BMS to the external interface
Responsibilities:
- Provide significant input into setting external scientific direction via collaborative efforts aligned with TME TRC objectives.
- Interface with the appropriate functional leaders as part of developing and executing on the plan developed for the Integrative Sciences group.
- Responsible for the communication to the internal client and partner groups (and their leadership) of the External Research activities and progress
- Responsible for the functional and collaborative interaction with academic and industry partners and oversight committees established to co-ordinate efforts agreed by the research and development plans
- Provide an example to others in terms of leadership of science and leadership of people and collaborative behavior. Demonstrate through personal actions a congruency between professional excellence and commitment to the entire team.
- Responsible for carrying out the established policies and procedures of the organization, and administering them within the scope of responsibility assigned.
- Compose progress reports and other documentation describing the actions and results of those activities and present to senior management.
- Through effective delegation, properly utilize the talents of staff to ensure all are fully engaged in contributing to the organization.
- Represent the organization as appropriate for responsibilities to other organizations, regulatory agencies, investors, the scientific community, partners, etc.
- Conduct presentations and group briefings regarding the scientific and organizational activities within responsibility.
- Act as a catalyst for positive resolutions of organizational conflicts, as a source of assistance to those who need to resolve such issues.
- Responsible for identifying potential collaborations in academia or industry to further the development of a robust, sustainable therapeutic pipeline.
- Contributes to Business Development reviews and will regularly provide expert opinion during due diligence activities.
Requirements:
The candidate will have a strong scientific background in an industrial setting. Significant experience in corporate and academic collaborations is essential and the ability to negotiate and manage external relationships.
- Ph.D. in scientific discipline that relates to Immunology, Oncology, and the Tumor Microenvironment.
- At least 12 years' experience within Discovery Research function in the pharmaceutical industry (5 yrs at or above Director or equivalent level).
- Considerable laboratory expertise that spans molecular, cellular and whole animal research as exemplified by research publications and/or patents.
- A record of developing therapeutics that have advanced to IND stage or beyond.
- Scientific knowledge and experience in Drug Discovery in Immunology, Oncology and the Tumor Microenvironment. Maintains current awareness in areas of expertise.
- Skill in managing external collaborators and setting clear expectations
- Knowledge of supervision and development of scientific employees. Skilled in applying that knowledge to optimize the performance of those supervised.
- Knowledge of the financial components of running scientific programs in a business, and the regulatory/legal issues affecting the organization's activities.
- Excellent leadership, managerial and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and communication skills to effectively represent vision, mission and accomplishments of the overall Integrative Sciences Group.
