Reporting to the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, the EHS Specialist is generally responsible for analyzing Physical Environment conditions, processes, and equipment within RHS facilities to determine risks of injury, occupational disease, and damage to property and equipment; in addition to developing measures for the control and reduction of such risks and limiting financial loss. The EHS Specialist also participates in activities in support of evaluating and maintaining compliance with OSHA/VOSH, EPA, VDEQ and other Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as requirements of accrediting bodies. Activities may include general policy and procedure development, management plan development, creating and conducting training, and monitoring metrics for continuous improvement.

Primary responsibilities entail:
  • Providing appropriate EHS subject matter and facility operations expertise in areas of Hazardous Waste Management, Hazard Communication, Solid Waste Management, Safety Engineering, Hazard Risk Assessment, and others as needed.
  • Coordinating environmental protection programs such as pharmaceutical, laboratory, facility, and medical waste management within RHS facilities
  • Assisting in development and implementation of RHS Environmental, Health, and Safety policy and guidance documents.
  • Conducting routine inspections and audits to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and RHS Environmental, Health and Safety policies.
  • Developing and delivering EHS education to team members (i.e. Hazardous Waste Compliance, Control of Hazardous Energy, Confined Space, Electrical Safety, etc.)
  • Identifying and coordinating performance improvement initiatives for hazardous materials and wastes
  • Collecting and monitoring Hazardous Materials and Waste metrics across RHS facilities (inspection/audit results, quantities of waste disposed, manifest recordkeeping, facility EPA Generator status)
  • Assisting RHS facilities in developing hazardous materials inventories, waste profiling, manifesting, and recycling programs.
  • Participating in RHS capital project and equipment reviews.


Riverside began serving the Virginia Peninsula community in 1916. In 1963, Riverside moved to the present 72-acre location in Newport News on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. A 450-bed facility, Riverside Regional Medical Center is the Virginia Peninsulas most comprehensive medical facility combining the most recent computerized medical technology with a healing environment. The Pavilion is a 250,000 sq. ft., $107 million, 3-story addition to Riverside Regional Medical Center, which opened in 2013. This acute care facility provides a regional cancer care center, the Peninsula regions only comprehensive stroke center, the areas only open-heart surgery program, the regions only Level II Trauma Center, and a cornerstone neurosciences program that includes the Chesapeake, Riverside and University of Virginia Radiosurgery Center.

Education: An Associate's degree in a science related field is required. A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Management preferred. Additional training in Physical Environment / Environment of Care / Hazardous Waste Management in a healthcare environment is desired.

Licensure: Valid Virginia driver's license with acceptable driving record and a 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or equivalent preferred.

Experience: 2-4 years of safety or environmental practice required. Healthcare operations preferred. Evidence of responsible job performance coordinating environmental, safety, and health programs. Demonstrated knowledge of Federal, State, and Local regulations to include: OSHA / VOSH, NFPA, EPA, and VDEQ.

Hours: Monday-Friday; Available to respond to emergency situations and travel to facilities in the region.
