Job Designation

The Environmental Specialist directs, manages and coordinates the Environmental, Health and Safety programs with specific focus on Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plan (PSM/RMP) to ensure the health, safety and well-being of employees, compliance with OSHA, EPA and other applicable regulatory agencies.

Job Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain a robust PSM and RMP (Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plan) related to propane gas.
  • Review, implement and maintain sites Environmental, Health & Safety Management Manual and program compliance and progress.
  • Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analysis for the site with focus on propane.
  • Manage the sites compliance to ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Manage the business approach to Hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal in line with appropriate regulations.
  • Perform audits of Environmental, Health & Safety compliance and implement corrective actions where required. Review new and existing safety regulations, perform gap analysis on present compliance methods and design strategies to ensure compliance with all regulations on a federal, state and/or local level.
  • Implement an accident investigation plan, data analysis and recurrence prevention programs and procedures.
  • Prepare reports and manuals interpreting and summarizing technical and/or complex information for use by individuals that are not proficient or knowledgeable in the subject matter.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies during inspections or in response to a complaint and mitigate any citations or fines while evaluating adequacy of actions taken to correct violations.
  • Conduct chemical exposure assessments either alone or with the collaboration of a specialist to ensure that workers are below chemical exposure limits set by regulatory agencies and/or the Company.
  • Maintain liaisons with outside organizations such as fire departments and rescue teams in order to ensure that adequate rescue responses can be facilitated.
  • Identify risk factors, and implement procedures to address those risks.
  • Maintain Site Business Continuity Plan in collaboration with key site personnel.
  • Major responsibilities that may be assigned to the incumbent include development and maintenance of specific corporate programs such as hearing conservation or respiratory protection; Health & Safety-related management activities; coordination or development of training programs.


Job Specifications

Education: Bachelors' degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

Years of Experience: Degree plus minimum of five (5) years' experience or 10 years of EHS experience with detailed knowledge of OSHA Federal Code of Regulations (CFR) 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68.  Certifications are required.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • This position requires frequent written and oral communication with personnel both internal and external to Meggitt. Interaction with all levels of management and employees in all facilities is necessary to satisfactorily resolve the variety of problems that occur.  Frequent correspondence occurs with customers concerning proper use and handling of Meggitt products. Contact with various government agencies is required to ensure regulatory compliance. Professional affiliations are maintained to follow current developments in the field and ensure maximum proficiency. Periodic contacts with individuals or organizations in the community are made to aid in problem solving or to provide an educational service.
  • The position of Environmental Project Specialist 3 is professional technical in nature. A working knowledge of the following is required:
    • Air sampling procedures and instrumentation
    • Ionizing and nonionizing radiation measurement and control
    • Noise measurement and control
    • Ventilation
    • Ergonomics
    • Toxicology
    • Personal protective equipment
    • Lockout standards
    • Government standards and regulations

Specialization in any of the above areas may be requested by the supervisor to meet the current needs of the Corporation and to complement the capabilities of other department personnel.
  • Some travel may be required to various facilities to directly observe, survey and advise on occupational health problems. Candidate must possess or be able to obtain a US Passport.
