Job Summary

The Elowitz Lab at Caltech is looking for a highly-motivated team member to work in our Therapeutic Circuits Group on developing and validating the therapeutic potential of biological circuits. Our team works in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment. The ideal applicant has experience with synthetic mammalian biology, is efficient at data analysis, and has some computer programming experience. She or he must be organized, hard-working, and have excellent communication skills. As the project progresses, there may be an opportunity to join an external startup.

Job Duties
  • Designing biological circuits and analyzing their performance in mammalian cells.
  • Mammalian cell culture, including primary human cells.
  • Fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry, including live cell and fixed cell imaging.
  • Overseeing in vivo experiments.
  • Researching therapeutic targets for synthetic circuits.
  • Accurate, timely, and complete record-keeping.
  • Additional duties as needed.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.
  • Must be very organized and have the ability to record, interpret, and report results with clarity.
  • Hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to multitask and rapidly iterate.
  • Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Broad interest in cutting-edge science and ability to read, interpret, and explain primary scientific literature.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or experience leading research projects.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian tissue culture.
  • Computer programming experience (Matlab or Python preferred).
  • Fluorescence microscopy experience.
  • Experience working in a startup-style environment.

  • A Cover Letter (no more than one page), describing (1) What is your publication or project that you are most proud of and why? What was the key achievement of that project? What does it enable? (2) What are you excited about in the area of synthetic biology for therapeutics? (3) What are your longer-term career ambitions?
  • A Research Report that you authored, including figures. This can be a first-author publication, first-author project report, undergrad research project, etc. If collaborative, indicate which components you contributed.
