Senior Biologist - Aquatic Biology/Fisheries Leader

About the Job

Dudek is seeking a Senior Biologist to lead our Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Group, with particular focus on offices and markets in central and northern California. The successful candidate will work with Dudek senior biology staff to prepare and implement business development and marketing strategies for aquatic biology and fisheries services. The position will also be responsible for training and mentoring junior staff, developing positive working relationships within various Dudek environmental service groups, and with Dudek contractors, clients, and resource agencies to proactively address fisheries and aquatic species/habitat issues. The Senior Biologist will direct and conduct fisheries and aquatic resources fieldwork and technical studies. They will also be responsible for oversight and participation in the preparation of technical reports, studies, and other documentation efforts, and will provide senior review of documents.

To be successful in the role, you will likely bring with you:

• Experience in leading/directing fisheries and aquatic biology professionals, working with a variety of public and private sector clients, and in developing and implementing business development strategies.
• Expertise with special-status inland fish and other aquatic biology species taxonomy, natural history, and ecology associated with western U.S. bioregions.
• Experience conducting presence/absence surveys, habitat assessments and characterizations, fish passage assessments, animal salvage and relocation operations, impact assessments, and other technical studies for special-status aquatic species including inland and anadromous fish species in a variety of habitats and locations.
• Experience with state/federal regulatory permitting processes and documentation needs, including the federal Endangered Species Act, the California Endangered Species Act, NEPA and CEQA.
• Professional credibility and work experience with state and federal resource agency staff including the National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the State Water Resources Control Board.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or related natural resources field, ideally that included coursework in fisheries and aquatic biology;
• 10+ years of professional biological/environmental consulting experience;
• Skillset in habitat assessment and field surveys for aquatic species;
• Knowledge and experience with river, stream, pond, and lake ecosystems;
• Excellent reputation with regulatory agencies in the field of aquatic and/or fisheries biology;
• Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, ability to work with a team, and strong written and oral communication skills;

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or related natural resources field with particular emphasis in fisheries and/or aquatic biology;
• Experience with benthic macroinvertebrates and aquatic bioassessments;
• Possession of a CDFW Scientific Collecting Permit, CDFW MOU, and/or USFWS 10A take permit for handling threatened or endangered aquatic wildlife species, particularly California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, and state/federally-listed fish species;
• Knowledge of and experience with aquatic habitat and species (including fish) in a variety of ecoregions in California;
• Experience in business development within an environmental consulting environment;
• Experience as a manager and mentor for junior or mid-level biologists;
• Membership with or active in resource-related professional organizations such as American Fisheries Society, American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, The Wildlife Society, and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles.
