Our location in Lake County, Illinois currently has an opportunity for a Director, Environmental Health & Safety, Product Safety & Product Stewardship.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
The primary function of the Director, EHS, Product Safety & Product Stewardship is to be responsible for directing, overseeing, and developing policies and programs to improve the organization's environmental and safety performance, while ensuring it complies with current and future regulations and standards, and protect its reputation. The incumbent should be a highly experienced manager and will have accountability for the budget. Additionally he/she will evaluate the programs and activities of Abbott Diagnostics locations across the globe and assess their compliance with applicable federal, local and company requirements. Through management of on-site audits, this position is responsible for evaluation of Abbott's compliance with Environmental, Safety, Occupational Health and Transportation requirements, minimizing risk and potential liability to Abbott as a publicly held corporate entity.
This position also supports Product Safety. Product Safety is a global team of technical professionals who develop Safety Data Sheets, Hazard Evaluation Letters and Risk Management Reports for Core Diagnostic reagents. This group works closely with our Labeling and technical teams. This position is also responsible for the Restricted Substance Management program for Core Diagnostics globally. This includes REACH, RoHS, Conflict Minerals and similar legislation/programs. The scope of the program includes governance for the global manufacturing locations in Core Diagnostics, as well as direct EHS responsibly for the Core Laboratory facilities. R&D Activities and distribution facilities (23). Responsibilities include:
- Plans and directs Governance/regulatory compliance function. Establishes vision and strategy to ensure the Division complies with all EHS laws, regulations and company policies with high quality and efficiency.
- Provides oversight of the ISO14001 Group certification for the division.
- Provides reporting of all Environmental and Safety metrics for the Division.
- Provides direction and leadership in support of the 2030 Sustainability program.
- Sets the EHS strategic plan for the Divisions.
- Acts as SME for technical aspects of EHS (Dangerous goods, hazard communication, Environmental Regulations.
- Maintains budget and resources for the Division EHS support.
- Develops and provide interpretation of Abbott Global standards minimizing EHS risks and enhancing program compliance.
- Validates data submitted at the division and facility level that is ultimately published and publicly communicated by senior management.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
- Develop and direct the implementation for Abbott Laboratories' Compliance System and LRP.
- Responsible for compliance in environmental health & safety policies
- Provides advice on safety, protection and performs audits to ensure that the organization and government standards on EH&S are met
- Frequently reports to Executive leadership within the EH&S department
- This position also supports Product Safety. Product Safety is a global team of technical professionals who develop Safety Data Sheets, Hazard Evaluation Letters and Risk Management Reports for Core Dx reagents.
- Direct the timely remediation of corrective action management program to ensure quality and on-time closure of all action items.
- Report and summarize compliance status, strengths and priority problems for senior executive and operations management.
- Provide recommendations to influence the direction of EHS program management and ensure the implementation of corrective actions.
- Improve compliance performance by sharing information on best practice and areas for improvement, providing tools for self-audit.
- Coordinate TPMs EHS policy and performance evaluation program to minimize business risk and enhance corporate EHS leadership.
- Tracks and stays current on regulation development and enforcement trend worldwide.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING
Required
- Associates degree required; Bachelor's degree / Master's degree in EHS related discipline strongly desired.
- Minimum 7 years relevant experience; 10+ years' experience in comprehensive, hands-on EHS experience; expertise in overall EHS regulations and technical areas strongly desired.

- 10+ years managing a function, including site EHS management, division and/or corporate EHS leadership.
- Global experience in the medical device or pharma industry strongly desired.
- Professional certifications (CIH, CSP, CHMM) preferred.
- Experience managing multiple facilities globally strongly desired
- Subject matter expert in Environmental, health and safety topics.
- Successful team leadership and people management experience involving cross-divisional, cross-functional, multi-culture global environment.
- Demonstrates ability to inspire and motivate others within the organization and across division/Department boundaries.
- Proven ability to effectively build and maintain relationships with internal and external clients/resources. Demonstrates ability to successfully negotiate among peers and customers.
- Experienced in setting vision and strategy to meet function and business objectives in a timely manner. Depth and breadth of knowledge regarding domestic and international EHS issues and the understanding of the application and value to the business operations.
- Effective in conflict situations to ensure objectives a met while maintaining group/organizational cooperation.
- Effective when working with people at various levels of management and from multiple functions both internal and external.
