Are you interested in performing innovative research in climate, earth, and atmospheric science as part of a dynamic team of scientists and researchers? Are you passionate about supporting the nation's zero carbon goal, enabling space missions such as the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover, and advancing emergency response to events of national significance? Do you have a passion to build programs, develop vision, and engage with potential customers to develop new research and application opportunities? Do you have interest in validating models using experimental data including both laboratory scale experiments and large scale field campaigns? This may be the career opportunity you have been looking for!
A hardworking and dedicated Atmospheric Science Postdoc is needed to advance, develop, and maintain the atmospheric modeling capabilities used in the various atmospheric transport and dispersion codes developed by the department. Our group focuses on protecting human health and the environment by analyzing the risks associated with severe accidents at nuclear power plants, space launch accidents of radioactive powered space vehicles, and other hazardous materials release scenarios. We seek applicants interested in advancing science in the areas of atmospheric dispersion of aerosol and gaseous pollutants, deposition velocity, aerosol physics, and dynamic plume rise modeling.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Address complex problems in support of broad-ranging mission areas.
- Collaborate with highly motivated researchers on challenging research questions.
- Perform application analysis on specific scenarios and evaluating the results.
- Prepare and present conference presentations, develop and write journal articles, develop and give seminars.
Required:

Department Description:
The Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department (ACMAD) supports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Department of Energy (DOE) by providing experts in the Modeling of the Atmospheric Transport, Environmental, and Economic impact of released Nuclear Material as well as expertise in severe accident phenomenology; for both Emergency Response, Emergency Preparedness, Licensing applications, and basic scientific research. This team consists of high performing multi-disciplined scientists and engineers that work in a collaborative environment to develop state of art computer codes and analyses of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities and the environmental transport of radiological releases, as well as the health and economic consequences of such releases. The team interacts broadly with both our domestic Federal customers as well as domestic and international customers, stake holders and customers with the goal of making nuclear power as safe as possible in a complex world faced with existential threats from climate change, terrorist threats and natural disasters. Furthermore the team supports space launch safety applications involving radioisotope powered or nuclear powered space vehicles such as the Mars 2020 Perserverance Rover.
