Multiple positions are available to work with Utah State University Wildland Resources faculty in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management Vernal Field Office (VFO) to conduct field work in the Uintah Basin to monitor white-tailed prairie dog populations.

Prairie Dog Crew Interns assist the VFO with Prairie Dog population monitoring in support of the black-footed ferret management plan. Known colonies will be inventoried for activity to generate population estimates. Interns will make field observations of wildlife or vegetation according to protocol, collect data, and enter data. They will collaborate with teammates and the crew lead to collect and assemble a high-quality data set in an efficient manner. Fieldwork may require strenuous hiking, work in adverse weather conditions, and irregular hours. Work may be conducted in a team setting or independently. Review of applicants will begin March 15, 2021.

Positions are funded for no more than 29 hrs/wk for 14 weeks each, roughly May 10th-August 20th. Preference will be given to qualified Utah State University students. Preference will also be given to applicants that can be present during the entire field season. Compensation will be $12.50/hr for crew members and $15/hr for crew leads. No housing is provided with this position. The duty station for these positions is Vernal, Utah.

Primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Conduct field surveys independently after training
  • Raptor identification
  • Mapping of prairie dog colonies based on Visual Encounter Surveys and Indirect Sign
  • Plant identification and quantification following protocol
  • Travel to field sites, driving 4WD vehicle on back roads
  • Hiking to work sites, sometimes in adverse weather, sometimes at irregular hours
  • Follow protocols for wildlife surveys with emphasis on minimizing disturbance
  • GPS management to find and monitor or map study sites


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience identifying local flora and fauna
  • Demonstrated fieldwork experience
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow safety regulations
  • Valid Utah driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials. Experience driving 4WD vehicles
  • Ability to efficiently execute directives and study plan
  • Ability to collaborate with crewmates and follow team lead


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional fieldwork experience
  • Professional plant identification experience or certifications
  • Professional wildlife identification experience
  • GIS, GPS, or orienteering experience
  • Experience with wildlife handling and survey protocols
  • Data entry experience
  • Demonstrated relevant coursework, including but not limited to one or more classes in a topic such as botany, ornithology or mammalogy, biology, ecology, natural resource management, or GIS

$12.50 per hour

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
