BEM has an excellent opportunity for a junior-level Geologist/Environmental Scientist position to support the Federal Remediation group in Anchorage, Alaska. Our growing backlog of challenging projects throughout Alaska has created exciting career opportunities for an individual that is interested in conducting a variety of environmental services for remediation and compliance projects. This individual will work directly with project managers providing support to various projects, including implementation of sampling plans, conducting/leading field investigations, subcontractor oversight of remedial actions, data analysis and site characterization and preparation of data tables. This person's main responsibilities are to support projects authorized by the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers while working under the guidance of experienced Engineers, Geologists and Scientists.

Key Responsibilities:

· Support field investigations (soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water). Includes coordination of field events, soil characterization and field screening, oversight of monitoring well installations and abandonments, annual groundwater monitoring, oversight of soil and groundwater remediation activities, collection of waste characterization samples, and oversight of demolition projects.

· Provide office support for projects, including supporting the preparing of permits, work plans, and technical reports.

· Become familiar with ADEC Cleanup rules, regulations and guidance documents including 18 Alaska Administrative Codes 60, 75 and 78.

· Obtain HAZWOPER certification per 29 CFR 1910.120 and U.S. Army Corps of Engineer training EM385-1-1.


· Bachelor's degree in Geology/Environmental Sciences or other related field.

· 3 to 5 years of professional experience

· Position requires full time residency in Anchorage or surrounding area.

· Three to five years of professional experience implementing environmental restoration projects.

· Clean background record to allow entry to Federal installations.

· Ability to work in remote areas for up to three weeks duration.

· Professional experience conducting site remediation, including supporting sampling plans, conducting field investigations, subcontractor oversight and assistance with report writing is a plus.

Abilities and Skills

· Good verbal and written communication skills.

· Ability to perform well under pressure and within established deadlines.

· Ability to work extra hours during periods of high volume.

· Ability to travel to remote areas for potential extended periods of time (up to 3 weeks) to complete field investigations.

· Preferred field skills include past experience conducting soil logging, soil headspace screening, soil and groundwater sampling, and use of global positioning systems.

· Ability to utilize electronic data collection applications (Fulcrum) and modeling software is a benefit.

· Subcontractor oversight and site safety management.
