Tesla is seeking a Sr. Environmental Program Manager to join the Global Environmental, Health and Safety Team (EHS). This role will support environmental compliance and permitting programs within Tesla's Gigafactory Texas in Austin. Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Global Environmental Affairs, this role will be responsible for performing technical work across a wide range of programs including environmental permitting, waste management, hazardous materials storage, water pollution prevention, and health and safety. Be part of the Tesla EHS Team that builds capacity, provides solutions, and drives continuous improvement throughout the Global Tesla Organization.

  • Ensure Tesla and its contractors operate in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and standards;
  • Support environmental permitting actions and evaluations across air, water, natural resources, and hazardous materials;
  • Provide management oversight of all regulated materials and wastes (e.g., soil, Universal Waste, RCRA, Used Oil, etc.) including performing waste determinations, analytical sampling, profiling, and vendor approvals;
  • Support Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan regulatory compliance;
  • Lead or support preparation of all environmental reports including air emissions, Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know (EPCRA) reports (e.g., TRI, Tier II), hazardous waste, and industrial stormwater and wastewater Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs);
  • Perform EHS risk assessments and establish layers of controls to reduce risk;
  • Perform event and incident analysis to determine causal factors, identify corrective actions, and drive them to closure;
  • Perform periodic inspections to drive the continuous improvement process;
  • Support program environmental audits and external agency inspections;

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or EHS-related discipline; Master's degree is preferred;
  • Seven (7) or more years of progressive increasing responsibilities managing environmental permitting and regulatory compliance across air, waste, water, hazardous materials, and natural resources protection programs.
  • Extensive experience leading the preparation of environmental reports for air emissions, EPCRA, hazardous waste, industrial storm water, and wastewater discharges.
  • Extensive experience leading air permitting, calculating air emissions, air dispersion modeling, and managing Title V air permit compliance.
  • Texas air permitting experience and agency negotiations strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of Environmental Laws and Regulations (e.g., CAA, CWA, EPCRA, GHG, RCRA, DOT, OSHA, etc.) and sustainability topics;
  • Ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly;
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills;
  • Able to work both independently and with ambiguity;
  • Evidence of exceptional ability;
  • Professional certifications or licenses such as CHMM, CPEA, or P.E. preferred.
