Job Description
The newly founded Salish Sea Modeling Center (SSMC) through a collaborative partnership between PNNL and University of Washington Puget Sound Institute, has initiated staffing actions to support a growing demand for Salish Sea basin-wide models of hydrodynamics, circulation, transport, water quality, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem (food web) for a wide variety of marine environmental applications. We invite applications from coastal ocean modeling enthusiasts for the Post-Doctoral Research Associate Position. This position is ideally suited for recent Ph.Ds in oceanography, or coastal, ocean, environmental, and civil engineering fields. The selected candidate(s) will join an established Salish Sea Modeling team, participate in multi-disciplinary research and model development and diagnostic application activities related to the Salish Sea and Puget Sound ecosystem restoration and water quality management efforts in progress. The selected candidates will be hired and located at PNNL and will support research in progress with the Salish Sea Model (SSM) . The candidate(s) will support implementation of new features and capabilities, improving overall predictive skill, and helping the team progress towards establishing an Operational Forecast System for the region.
Technical responsibilities will include research and development activities targeted towards improving the model performance. This may require refining and extending the existing Salish Sea Model in a variety of ways, and setting up, testing, and incorporating new modules related to (a) Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport (b) Biogeochemistry, (c) Toxics Fate and Transport, and (c) Ecosystem Food Web Kinetics. Our primary modeling platforms are based on FVCOM and CE-QUAL-ICM models for the coastal ocean environment on high performance computing (HPC) clusters. We also have companion projects that utilize codes such as SUNTANS, ADH, ROMS, DELFT3D, WASP/TOXI, and CE-QUAL-W2 and therefore experience with one or more of these models will be beneficial.
- Familiarity of working with parallelized Fortran codes in a Linux environment, experience with installation of MPI libraries, compiling, debugging codes and, python and MATALB scripting will be a major plus.
This is a full-time position.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in conducting oceanographic modeling using one or more of the leading state-of-the art 3-D ocean modeling codes (eg. FVCOM, ADCIRC, ROMS, SELFE/SCHISM, DELFT-3D, SUNTANS and CE-QUAL-ICM, WASP/TOXI).
- Experience and/or familiarity with parallelized Fortran codes in Linux environment and the ability to modify, debug, and new modules / subroutines
- Ph.D in coastal, environmental, civil, oceanography and engineering specializing in coastal hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modeling and analysis
