About the position
The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences at the University of South-Eastern Norway has available a permanent fulltime post vacancy in applied statistics in the fields of ecological and environmental sciences from 01.08.2021.
The post relates to the Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health, and the immediate superior is the Head of the Department.The main working place is in Bø, in the Municipality of Midt-Telemark, Vestfold and Telemark County, Norway.


Responsibilities and duties
The Department offers a BSc program in Natural Sciences, with specialisations in Ecology and Natural Resources as well as Pollution and the Environment, a MSc program in Environmental Sciences, and a PhD program in Ecology. The successful candidate will have teaching and supervision duties at all program levels. Relevant courses to be taught include an introductory biostatistics course at the BSc level, a medium-level course at the MSc level, and an advanced course at the PhD level. The successful candidate may be required to contribute to courses at other departments. The university considers distance learning and e-learning to be a priority area. Therefore, experience with online tools and digital media in teaching and supervision will be emphasized.
The successful applicant is expected to actively carry out and contribute to research and research activities in ecology and/or related research areas at the department. The department offers excellent opportunities for research, with access to good laboratory facilities and diverse terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems locally, regionally, and nationally. The department’s research groups collaborate with many national and
international partners. Current focus areas of research include, amongst others, climate change, water quality, pollution, aquatic ecology, vegetation ecology, and mammalian ecology.
The successful candidate is also expected to participate in research leadership and guidance in strategic areas of the University’s network of researchers. The candidate’s experience with, and successful acquisition of external research funding will be considered important, and it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to such efforts and to the development of national and international research networks.


Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a documented broad and solid background and research competence in applied biostatistics, preferrably as a statistician with strong interest in biology/ecology, or as an ecologist with a very strong training in statistics. Experience within one or more of the following subjects and methods will be emphasized:
Handling of large and complex data sets
Study design
Factorial and regression methods, time series analysis
Multivariate methods
Spatial methods, GIS analyses and remote sensing
Handling and analysis of relocation data sets, multi-state modelling
Bayesian methods/INLA
Bioinformatics and/or machine learning methods
Excellent knowledge of the statistical software environment R


Applicants must document an active professional network, and the ability and willingness for project acquisition. Applicants must have experience with and/or motivation for research-based teaching, and we also expect the successful candidate to contribute to preparing students for a relevant career after their graduation. The teaching language at the BSc level is Norwegian, and English at the MSC
and PhD levels. In case the successful candidate does not speak a Scandinavian language, the Department will try to support the acquisition of the necessary language skills.
We emphasize good cooperation and communication skills, and the candidate should be able to demonstrate experience, ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team, and be motivated to share his or her knowledge. For an appointment as a Full Professor, an academic level in accordance with established international or national standards is required, i.e. a documented extensive research and teaching experience within biostatistics. For an appointment as an Associate Professor it is required that the applicant holds a Norwegian doctorate within statistics, or an equivalent international doctoral degree, or qualifications at the same level documented by scientific production of equivalent scope and quality.

Educational competence and quality development
In accordance with the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research post, the University of South-Eastern Norway has established requirements that applicants for the posts of Associate Professor or Full Professor must be able to document skills in university and university college level pedagogy, subject didactics and digital competencies. On this basis, it is assumed that applicants can
document educational skills through successfully completed university-level educational programmes of study or equivalent courses with a minimum of 200 hours of work and that they have developed fundamental skills in planning, implementing, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision at a university or university college level.
Alternatively, documentation is required to demonstrate the candidate’s own practice as a teacher, academic supervisor and educational supervisor in higher education, combined with relevant educational programmes, courses and seminars and documentation of acquired basic skills in planning, implementing, evaluating and developing teaching and supervision.
For applicants assessed primarily on the basis of their practice, there is an experience requirement within teaching, academic and educational supervision that corresponds to a portion of a full-time position in higher education corresponding to two years. Candidates who do not meet the requirements upon hiring are obliged to meet them within two years after being hired for the position. The two-year rule does not apply when
applying for a promotion.

Applicants who do not have educational qualifications of this kind may be appointed on the condition that they qualify within two (2) years.
Courses in university and university college level pedagogy will be offered.
It is expected that newly employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) will acquire knowledge of Norwegian at an equivalent standard to advanced level Norwegian test ("Bergenstesten") within 2 years.

Professional competence and scientific production in biostatistics, preferably in the field of ecology and/or related fields.
Teaching experience in statistics, especially in relation to ecological and environmental applications

Experience from international research mobility.
Experience from research-driven innovation and industry collaboration.

Salary
Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) (position code 1011): LT 61-77 NOK 542,400 - 741,300 per year. Professor (position code 1013): NOK 667,200 - 934,800 per year (LT 72 - 85). In special circumstances, a higher salary may be considered. Salary grade will be adjusted according to seniority and competence. Statutory amounts for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted from salary.
The person appointed must comply with the laws, regulations and agreements that apply at any given time to the post.

A description of experience with academic supervision at the master’s and PhD levels. In addition to a description of the scope of academic supervision, the applicant shall also summarize his/her experience and identify potential areas of development.
A description of and reflection over own leadership, participation in and role in the development of educational quality in the professional academic environment.
