Open position for a Masters student to conduct research in road ecology. Roads and traffic significantly increase mortality in wildlife populations and act as movement barriers reducing access to important resources for many species. The objective of this research is to propose locations for road mitigation measures to reduce the effect of a highway on wildlife populations. The study area is along a high-traffic highway in Quebec in collaboration with the NGO Corridor appalachien (http://www.corridorappalachien.ca/en/). The region provides important habitat for many wildlife species, and there is increasing concern about the interruption of connectivity for wildlife by roads. The research involves fieldwork, data analysis, and writing of thesis/report/publication. The research requires a strong interest in fieldwork.

Qualifications:

- some fieldwork experience would be ideal

- good knowledge of data analysis

- strong organizational skills and ability to work independently

- strong interpersonal and communication skills

- species identification skills

- Ability to speak French is a valuable asset.

Work Environment: The fieldwork will be conducted in the area between Montreal and Sherbrooke, and between Bromont and Magog more specifically. Fieldwork will be conducted over several months each year. The student will be a member of the Landscape Ecology and Environmental Impact Assessment lab of Dr. J. Jaeger at Concordia University in Montreal. The MSc degree can be obtained either in Geography or Biology.

Funding support: This MSc position is funded.
