Wildlife Investigator - Wyoming Game and Fish Department

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Wildlife Investigator to be based out of Pinedale/Jackson, Wyoming. In order to protect the wildlife resource and provide for wildlife conservation, this position independently conducts criminal investigations, apprehends persons, and assists prosecution of persons violating State and Federal laws and regulations, with an emphasis on self-initiated complex, long term overt and covert investigations involving multiple suspects, violations and jurisdictions, while applying specialized investigative methods, techniques, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

 

  • Responsible for the investigation of complex cases in regards to personal and public property.
  • Gathers and researches information; and prepares evidence, exhibits, witnesses, etc.
  • Collection, examination, identification, and comparison of physical evidence.
  • Conducts crime scene work and/or field investigations.
  • Interviews witnesses, informants, victims and suspects.
  • Provides verbal and written investigative reports.
  • Prepares and executes state and federal search warrants.
  • Testifies in state and federal courts and in the federal grand jury.
  • Prepares reports and related case documents and presentations.
  • Possess a strong level of computer skills and a working knowledge of and ability to interact in covert social media settings.
  • Performs instant decisions while considering future results and ramifications.
  • Liaison with public and other local, state and federal officials in a positive productive fashion.
  • Coordinates and ensures that investigations of infractions of state law and agency rules and regulations are conducted and completed in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinates agency law enforcement field activities.
  • Carries out law enforcement responsibilities.
  • Attends training.
  • Receives criminal complaints.
  • Writes detailed reports based on findings of research, investigation, inquiries and interviews.
  • Independently initiate, develop, conduct and coordinate wildlife related criminal investigations of the person(s) for misdemeanors and felonies, concentrating on long-term and complex investigations.
  • Prepares, documents, and presents criminal cases for prosecution and assists prosecution as lead investigator.
  • Collects, records, analyzes, examines, reviews and handles general and sensitive, restricted or classified information involved in criminal investigations, provide investigative and enforcement reports, maintain databases, build databases, query databases, provide for the security and privacy of the information, and disseminate appropriately.
  • Plans, coordinates, conduct and records events of covert operations.
  • Coordinates and assists in Regional and Statewide enforcement efforts, as it applies to the Agency mission.
  • Prepares and submits complete and accurate enforcement reports for department records and administration of the wildlife investigator position.
  • Seek out and attend specialized training in criminal investigations and provides specialized advance training to Unit investigators, Game Wardens, and other Law Enforcement officers.


  QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference will be given to those with five (5) or more years of experience in wildlife law enforcement and/or major case investigations. 

**Must have a valid driver's license.


KNOWLEDGE: 

 

  • Knowledge of principles, major concepts and prevalent practices in criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of criminal procedures and state and federal laws relating to criminal justice.
  • Knowledge of evidence handling, storage and destruction procedures.
  • Knowledge of criminal behavior, firearms, self-defense, custody, and control.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement research and investigative techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems, including but not limited to Windows Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and forum blogs and media classified ads sites.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)

 

Experience:

0-3 years of progressive work experience in (Criminal Justice)
 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Driver's License

POST Certification required

 

OR

 

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience in (Criminal Justice)

 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Driver's License

  NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

  • Execute High Risk Search Warrants; perform duties involving armed subjects threatening officer and public safety.
  • POST certified and will be required to obtain and maintain Wyoming POST certification.

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.
  • Statewide travel will be required.
