The NorthWoods Stewardship Center, in East Charleston, Vermont, is celebrating 30 years of commitment to promoting the long-term stewardship of human and natural resources of the Northern Forest and the Connecticut River Watershed. NorthWoods fulfills its mission by providing science-based education, and conservation services, supporting the sustainable management of our natural resources, and improving the health and well-being of Northern Forest communities.

Position Objectives
NorthWoods seeks an enthusiastic leader to increase our organizational effectiveness, our annual budget, and program scope and reach, while furthering the strategic goals of the organization. The ideal candidate will have a passion for our unique blend of forestry, science, education, and conservation that leads to measurable outcomes. Ideally, the Executive Director candidate will have a familiarity with the geography, cultures, and principal stakeholders of the Northern Forest region.

The Executive Director will have a keen ability to think and act strategically. This person will need to communicate clearly and consistently with staff and board members as well as a myriad of conservation organizations, political figures, and federal and state agencies. The Executive Director must possess the leadership skills necessary to effectively facilitate collaboration among a staff of motivated, talented, and dedicated professionals.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
Implement and execute strategic and annual planning. Provide organizational leadership and vision for NorthWoods.

Board Relations
Build and maintain a strong, positive relationship with the Board of Trustees. Facilitate and lead development efforts including board training and growth. Act as the liaison between the staff and the Board of Trustees. Regularly provide the Board with relevant information that will help them govern the organization.

Financial Management
Achieve the financial goals as outlined in the $1,000,000 annual budget. Work closely with the Board of Trustees and staff to improve current management systems and develop sustainable sources of operating revenues to expand the financial base of support.

Program Development
Oversee program development and implementation throughout NorthWoods. Track organizational performance and effectiveness to inform future programs.

Advancement
Identify major donors and increase fundraising in line with budgetary goals. Build the endowment fund. Increase NorthWoods’ visibility and recognition through marketing and outreach.

Public Relations
Effectively represent NorthWoods and communicate the vision, mission, objectives and programs of the NorthWoods Stewardship Center to a wide range of local and regional partners, agencies, and stakeholders. Develop effective partnerships and coalitions. Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards for the organization in all its activities and relationships.

Facilities
Oversee needed preventative maintenance and routine care of campus and vehicles to ensure both the appearance of the campus and the functionality of the facilities and equipment.

Supervisory Role
Supervise 15 year-round staff, with directors reporting directly to the Executive Director. Provide effective leadership, supervision and management of staff and volunteers. Ensure regular performance reviews of all staff to provide effective accountability framework. Create and maintain a working environment conducive to personal growth, creative work and high productivity. Empower the staff to achieve outstanding results and inspire them to work productively as a team.

Qualifications

  • College degree and experience in a field related to conservation, forestry, environmental education, or natural resource management
  • 7 years hands-on experience in a non-profit organization.
  • Working knowledge of conservation, forest stewardship, and environmental education programs.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational management abilities.
  • Demonstrated skills in business, financial management, and creative problem solving.
  • Experience in an array of development activities, including individual giving, foundation grants, corporate relations, and special events.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through the written and spoken word.
  • Ability to lead and work as a member of a team.
  • Commitment to the NorthWoods Stewardship Center mission.
