The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, the Joseph E. Ibberson Chair in Forest Resources Management. The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level, on a 36-week academic year appointment, with 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% Extension responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized, extramurally supported research program focused on the conservation and management of forest lands for multiple values and to address private forest resources management issues through scholarly study and outreach activities. The successful candidate must be, or have the capacity to be, an outstanding and enthusiastic teacher and mentor. Indeed, a primary purpose of the Ibberson Chair is to educate students in the management of private forest resources to attain multiple benefits of sustainable forest management. The successful candidate is expected to teach at least two undergraduate courses, at least one with a field component, and one graduate course annually in the area of forest resource management and forest stewardship on private lands covering topics such as wildlife habitat management, forest restoration, and managing forests for multiple values. Other responsibilities include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, serving on graduate committees, advising undergraduate students, supervising undergraduate and graduate research, and service to the University community. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with the Forestry and Wildlife Extension team within the College of Agricultural Sciences and the Center for Private Forests at Penn State (ecosystems.psu.edu/private-forests) to facilitate outreach to the larger public around forest conservation and management in the area of the candidate's expertise. Additional opportunities exist to support student outreach through recruitment and oversight of internships. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in forestry, wildlife, natural resource conservation, or a related field with a preference for candidates with a least one degree in forestry; a strong publication record and the potential to develop an extramurally funded research program; and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in forest management, wildlife habitat management, and spatial analysis of forest resources. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Communication, creative leadership, collegiality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is essential in our department and university. The Ibberson Chair can take advantage of the extensive research and outreach infrastructures available at Penn State, one of the top-ranked research universities in the country. Resources include land holdings of more than 9000 acres of forestland within 30 minutes of the main campus and a new forest resources building with modern labs and classrooms to facilitate teaching and research. Multiple Centers and Institutes at the University offer numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations and utilization of shared facilities. Central Pennsylvania offers thriving communities with a reasonable cost of living, excellent schools and health care systems and numerous recreational, arts and entertainment opportunities. The area offers beautiful mountains, streams and parks, as well as superb sports and recreational opportunities.
