Assistant Professor in Fisheries Conservation

The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville invites applications for a 12-month tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor in Fisheries Conservation (70% Research/30% Teaching).  The individual must be committed to excellence in research and teaching and have a strong interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.  The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized and independent research program capable of attracting graduate students and external funding in their area of expertise.  The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.


Expectations of the position include engagement in university and professional service activities and a commitment to the Land Grant University mission of teaching, research, and outreach.  The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting fisheries conservation research and teaching activities in freshwater ecosystems.  Research areas could include conservation genetics, fish physiology, invasive species, species recovery, or other topics that utilize quantitative approaches.  Teaching responsibilities will include WFS 443 Fisheries Science, the fisheries component of FWF 315 Principles of Wildlife and Fisheries Science, and a senior/graduate level course in an area of research specialty.


Candidates must be committed to collaborating with diverse groups within and outside of the university including students, faculty, state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, agricultural and forest producers, natural resource groups, and other private sector entities.  In addition to securing extramural funding, the successful candidate will be expected to publish in the peer-refereed literature, advise undergraduate students, direct graduate students in research, serve on departmental committees, and participate in professional societies.

Required qualifications:  A Ph.D. in fisheries science or a closely related field completed prior to the position start date.


Additional desired qualifications:  AFS Certification; expertise and experience in freshwater fisheries conservation; experience in classroom instruction; a strong publication record; success in grant writing; and, a record of collaboration and cooperative research with state and federal natural resource agencies and non-government organizations.  Review of applications will begin November 1, 2019, and will continue until position is filled.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.
