We are seeking an intern for 6 to 8 months to work on various amphibian research projects relating to disease ecology and behavior. The position will start in June or July (flexible start date). The internship is based at the Panama Amphibian Research and Conservation Project http://amphibianrescue.org/, in Panama.

The project will be mostly laboratory based, working hands-on with highly endangered frog species held in captivity. Additionally, there will be some potential for local fieldwork. Intern will work on an existing disease ecology project focused on the amphibian chytrid fungus assisting with daily husbandry, lab work, and a developing behavioral experiment examine effects of captivity on Amphibians. Position is full-time and based in Panama. Intern will be based in Panama City for up to two months and then in Gamboa. Gamboa is a very small town on the edge of the Panama Canal and full of researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (https://stri.si.edu/facility/gamboa).

Desired qualifications

-husbandry experience (ideally with amphibians or fish)

-experience working on research projects

-comfortable living and working in the tropics, sometimes under less than ideal circumstances (e.g., hot, muggy, working late at night, and mosquitos)

-fieldwork experience 

- enjoys working in a team, but also can work alone all day if necessary. A problem solver and self directed.

-Spanish language proficiency a bonus, but not required

-experience designing your own research projects (there may be an opportunity to develop your own side project for a small publishable research project)

-degree in biology or conservation sciences (or working towards one)

-attention to detail (the frogs are very rare and we have to make sure we don’t make mistakes)

-ability to lift and move aquarium tanks (about 8 kg / 20 lbs), work standing on a small ladder, hike in the tropical forest for moderate distances

- experience pipetting and doing lab work a plus

Living Stipend

- $1000 stipend per month

- flights to and from Panama City, Panama

- possibility of stipend for housing in a shared Smithsonian housing (if funding is not available, monthly rent is approximately $250 a month. We are sorting the budget and should know shortly if this is available).
