Job Details

The Stewardship Ecologist I is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the volunteer stewardship, volunteer monitoring and native seed nursery operations.  Responsible for the native seed program by growing/collecting native species, processing and storing seed, and the operation of the native seed nursery and greenhouse.  Coordinates native seed collection, processing and dispersal to support department projects.  Assists in volunteer program development, recruiting, development of training programs and materials, and mentors volunteers and support staff.  Work schedule includes evening and weekend hours.  Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations.  Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching and sitting.  Performs lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.

EXPERIENCE

Completion of Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in environmental science, botany, resource management or related field.  Two years’ experience in native plant progagation, greenhouse operations and operation of a seed nursery and experience in volunteer programs and recruitment and natural areas management and monitoring.  Knowledge of flora and fauna of northeastern Illinois, with particular emphasis in invasive and native plant species.  Ability to identify species of native plants for accurate seed collection.  Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in natural areas management and restoration.  Some knowledge of standard plant and animal monitoring methods.  Willingness to regularly work on weekends to facilitate volunteers.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  Ability to obtain an Illinois Public Applicator’s License within first 6 months of employment.  Ability to obtain certificates in National Wildfire Coordinating Group wildland fire trainings I-100, S-130 & S-190.
