Job Details

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is one of America's largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organizations, with more than six million supporters and 51 state-level affiliate organizations throughout the U.S. and its territories. Our programs focus on conserving wildlife, restoring habitat and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities for all, connecting children with nature, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.

We are seeking a Conservation Science Fellow for a full-time 11-month, paid opportunity.  This position is based at NWF’s National Advocacy Center in Washington, DC and supports our Wildlife and Climate Safeguards Team. This team serves as NWF’s lead on issues related to climate adaptation and resilience, provides scientific leadership and support on wildlife conservation and policy issues, and supports the organization’s commitment to using the best available science in its work on policy, advocacy, conservation, education, and communications.  In this role you will report to the Senior Wildlife Biologist and support NWF’s Chief Scientist.

NWF Fellows must be available to work a 40-hour weekly schedule. This 11-month position offers $14.25/hour plus core benefits.

In this role you will:

  • Provide support to Safeguards Team members in implementing funded projects, including assisting with project coordination, conducting research, and translating findings into written materials and other project deliverables. Current projects include work to: advance the science and practice of climate adaptation (especially among U.S. federal and state agencies); promote the use of living shorelines and other nature-based approaches for coastal resilience; and increase the pace of climate-informed forest restoration to sequester and store carbon.
  • Support work related to implementation of NWF’s strategic plan in the areas of wildlife conservation, habitat connectivity and corridors, climate adaptation, invasive species, and wildlife disease.
  • Assist in implementing NWF’s internal science review process, which is designed to ensure scientific accuracy and credibility of public-facing materials, including reports, social media posts, blogs, advocacy alerts, and fundraising appeals.
  • Schedule and record minutes for NWF’s Science Coordination Team (which includes science-related staff working at national, international, and regional-levels), Wildlife Conservation Team, and other internal and external meetings.
  • Research, write, and edit reports, factsheets, blogs, and other web content on wildlife conservation, conservation biology, climate adaptation, and related topics.
  • Update and maintain a directory of NWF science and resource management expertise and survey Federation affiliates to identify additional science and resource management expertise.
  • Administrative and other duties as assigned, including helping with legislative fly-ins and outreach, events, and front desk duties.

Qualifications we’re looking for include:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field, with a focus on wildlife biology, conservation biology, botany, or ecology.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a professional office setting, preferably with a conservation, scientific, or environmental agency or organization.
  • Computer literacy a must. Proficient with Microsoft office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to wildlife conservation and climate change issues.
  • Broad knowledge of life history and identification of North American wildlife and habitats.
  • Ability to communicate scientific or technical material to a wide-range of audiences. Original writing and editing samples will be requested.
  • Ability and willingness to perform administrative support tasks for a high-performing professional team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers and develop positive working relationships.
  • Strong work ethic and time management skills.

Your actions are expected to reflect the staff values of the National Wildlife Federation: collaboration, mindfulness, empowerment, inclusivity, and mission focus.

We are committed to building a complementary team and strongly support candidates from all backgrounds to apply.  If you meet more than 75% of the qualifications of this description, we support your application. If selected, a background check will be conducted.

We strive to increase diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (DEIJ) in all elements of our work and with our partners to support the interdependent needs of wildlife and people in a rapidly changing world.  We recruit, employ, train, compensate, and promote regardless of race, of race, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity (including gender nonconformity and status as a transgender or transsexual individual), age, physical or mental disability, citizenship, genetic information, past, current or prospective service in the uniformed services, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state or local law.  We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

If you have a disability and require an accommodation or assistance with our online application process, please tell us how we can help by calling us at 703-438-6244.

Candidates should submit both a cover letter and resume, along with an original writing sample.
