SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position
with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Kauai Endangered Seabird
Recovery Project (KESRP), located on Kauai, Hawai‘i. Continuation of
employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work
performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State

Desired Start Date: March 25, 2019

Monthly Salary: $3,100/Month

Field Crew Leader directs and works in conjunction with a field crew in coordinating all aspects of
the field research conducted by the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project
(KESRP) regarding locating, monitoring, and managing endangered seabirds on
Kauai. Performs scheduling, equipment management, logistics, public outreach,
and works with land management agencies and project cooperators. Oversees
day-to-day field activities of field crew. Conducts surveys of Newell’s Shearwater
and Hawaiian Petrel movement between breeding colonies and the sea, using
modified marine radar, visual surveys (with binocular, scope, and night-vision),
and auditory surveys. Assists with implementation of management and
monitoring for seabirds at breeding colonies, including predator control.
Performs data management, preliminary analyses of field data, and data entry
into Geographic Information System (GIS) and databases. Produces maps and
conducts analyses in ArcGIS. Trains new staff in fieldwork methodologies and
protocols. Assists in the preparation of materials for administrative reports,
publications in appropriate service outlets, and professional journals. Operates a
motor vehicle and a variety of equipment for field studies. Field season continues through December. Candidates able to commit to multiple field seasons preferred. 


EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited
four (4) year college or university in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Science, or other related
biological discipline.

EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of (paid or volunteer)
experience in biological fieldwork (Volunteer experience must be documented and
verifiable). Demonstrated experience with one (1) or more of the following: auditory
point counts, operating ornithological radar, visual survey methods of seabirds on land
or at sea, use of song meters, or use of burrow cameras. Previous leadership

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of the principles of wildlife
population ecology and conservation, particularly colonial nesting seabirds. Working
knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Programs (Excel, Word, Access),
and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) GIS software. Able to monitor
and manage avian population ecology. Able to properly and safely handle seabirds.
Able to operate modified marine radar. Able to perform data manipulation and
preliminary analyses using Microsoft Office and other software programs. Able to
effectively use ArcGIS (or be willing to learn). Able to learn to recognize and correctly
identify common plant species. Able to locate birds by their calls. Able to use a map,
compass, and Global Positioning System (GPS) to navigate in dense forests. Able to
take detailed field notes, follow a prescribed system for data collection, and make
simple maps, graphs, charts, and written and verbal reports. Able to communicate
effectively both orally and in writing. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of
personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance
equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a
post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety
course within two (2) months from date of hire Must possess the American Red Cross
Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training
provided within two (2) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike at least four (4)
miles on obscure or off trails with a thirty to forty (30-40) pound backpack and live and
work in isolated field camps under primitive conditions for extended periods of time.

background training in seabird ecology. Experience working in remote areas.
Experience working with Hawaiian forest birds and/or seabirds. Experience with forest-
breeding petrels. Experience running predator control and monitoring programs for
seabirds. Familiarity with native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and local conservation issues.
Experience with use of ESRI GIS geospatial databases. Experience with statistical
software, such as R, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and Statistical
Analysis Software (SAS). Experience writing peer-reviewed manuscript publications.
Familiarity with Kauai.
