The wildlife technician position is designed to support the wildlife management team within Resource Management, including a cross-regional team of 12 senior and area wildlife biologists, to deliver wildlife objectives for the Peace Region. Responsibilities will include assisting with wildlife surveys (i.e. ungulates [moose, elk, deer, caribou, sheep, goats, bison], carnivores, and furbearers) and wildlife habitat assessment components including: data collection, management and analysis, assisting in the planning and delivery of population surveys, file management and archiving, equipment maintenance, and participation in research activities. The position functions as a key member of an integrated team of professional and technical staff responsible for the management of wildlife resources in the Upper and Lower Peace Region. The incumbent will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be required to work independently, however direction will be provided by the supervisor and other wildlife staff.
While these positions will be located in their respective offices within either Grande Prairie (Upper Peace) or Peace River (Lower Peace), the work will provide opportunities to work within both regions. The Peace Region is a busy region for wildlife management and this position will involve interaction with a diverse team of over 12 wildlife biologists and technicians. The working area spans across a mosaic of Rocky Mountains, farmland, boreal forests, and prairie-parkland. The Peace Region offers abundant recreational activities including canoeing/kayaking, hiking, skiing, fishing and hunting.
The Peace Region offers a dynamic work environment with 10-50% of time expected to be in the field, with travel within the region done by vehicle, ATV, fixed-wing or helicopter. There is the potential for extensive time out of the office while conducting winter surveys. Applicants must be willing to work overtime and on some weekends.

Salary: $2,150.48 to $2,734.23 bi-weekly ($56,127 to $71,363 annually). Closing Date: July 23, 2018. Job ID #1049810
- A related two-year diploma plus 3 years related experience. Related diploma includes Natural Sciences, Bachelor of Science degree or similar equivalency
- A willingness and physical ability to participate in aerial surveys from both a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft
- Physical ability to conduct field work. For example, use of ATVs, assisting others in safe lifting of fuel drums, moving and manipulating immobilized wildlife etc.
- Standard 1st aid, or ability to acquire within 2 weeks of hire
- Working knowledge with data collection and data entry procedures, sampling/survey techniques and record keeping for wildlife management initiatives
- An understanding of methods for data management and analysis techniques
- Ability and familiarity with GIS techniques and software
- An understanding of fish and wildlife resource management techniques
- Working knowledge of game, non-game, furbearer species common to Alberta
- Awareness of Wildlife Act, Species at Risk Act, Alberta fish and wildlife policies, procedures and legislation
- Familiarity with Occupational Health & Safety standards, practices and responsibilities.
Equivalencies will be considered. Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education, or one year of education for one year of experience.
