Restoration Manager, Park Stewardship Program

We believe it is the synergy between these elements that creates passionate and informed citizens invested in the health and future of parklands while engaging a broad constituency in support of public land. Our Restoration Team assesses the ecological needs of Park Stewardship sites and works to restore habitats for the rare species that they support.
The Restoration Manager provides ecological expertise and leadership to the Park Stewardship Program. The position will oversee data management and reporting for Park Stewardship sites in Marin (Muir Beach, Oakwood Valley, Wolfback Ridge), San Francisco (Lands End, Fort Funston, and Presidio Coastal Bluffs) and San Mateo (Mori Point, Milagra Ridge). The position will support the Senior Restoration Manager in natural resource management activities on select Park Stewardship Sites.  Depending on future funding, projects and evolving priorities, this position may shift to support new projects and different areas. This position reports to the Senior Restoration Manager.   Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Supervision & Oversight

  • Assist the Senior Restoration Manager in hiring, training, supervising, and mentoring Park Stewardship staff and interns. Help to develop staff and intern workplans and track and support staff progress.
  • Train staff and interns in all aspects of restoration including manual, mechanical, and chemical invasive species control, rare species monitoring, GIS, GPS, revegetation, data analysis, report writing, and contract management.
  • Create field workplans for Community Program Managers for volunteer restoration programs. Provide oversight for restoration technician work on Park Stewardship sites. Ensure both meet high quality standards.

  • Data  Management and Reporting
  • Work with National Park Service to develop annual vegetation plans, reports, and pesticide requests for Park Stewardship sites.
  • Ensure quality control of all restoration-related data and reporting including work performed databases, GIS databases, excel spreadsheets, and photography management.
  • Direct the collection, management, analysis and reporting of data for threatened and endangered species, experiments, and other unique projects at select sites. Mentor interns through process of collecting, managing, analyzing, and reporting data and ensure quality control.
  • Manage spatial data in GIS and other formats to support program actions or reflect program achievements. Mentor interns through process of collecting, managing, analyzing, and displaying spatial data and ensure quality control.
  • Write reports that summarize restoration activities, support fundraising efforts, and report program accomplishments.
  • Perform advanced analysis of monitoring data using statistical tests.
  • Coordinate monitoring protocols such as rare plant monitoring, vegetation monitoring transects, endangered species monitoring, and photomonitoring.

  • Natural Resources Management
  • Work with Senior Restoration manager to develop and implement annual and monthly restoration plans for Park Stewardship sites. 
  • Work with staff and interns to implement restoration projects using current habitat restoration techniques and monitoring practices.  Projects include manual, mechanical, and chemical invasive species removal, revegetation, fence construction, mapping, and monitoring. 
  • Develop revegetation plans for Park Stewardship sites.
  • Develop and implement site-specific actions to recover threatened and endangered species.
  • Develop and manage special projects and contracts. Prepare contractor scopes of work, project timelines, staff work plans and implementation budgets, track deliverables, manage logistics and document activities.
  • Complete environmental compliance for special projects and ensure that environmental compliance measures, including those for threatened and endangered species, are properly I mplemented.
  • Ensures maintenance of all tools, equipment, and storage facilities associated with restoration work and maintains company vehicles.
  • Develop, manage, and track various budgets to achieve restoration goals.
  • Evaluate quality and effectiveness of restoration activities; work collaboratively to adapt methods as needed.

  • Outreach, Education, and Communication
  • Closely collaborate and nurture relationships with NPS and Conservancy natural resources managers to make sure programs are meeting park need.
  • Actively participates in local or statewide affinity conferences through volunteerism, planning, or attendance.
  • Lead and support volunteer groups and programs, as needed.  Coordinate and lead educational programs, presentations, and walks, as needed.
  • Engage park visitors on site, communicate about park issues in an open and positive manner, and educate the public about volunteer and educational opportunities. Assist with development and implementation of public information strategies.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education in biology/environmental science or related field.
  • 3 + years’ experience in field application of ecological restoration techniques, including manual, mechanical, and chemical invasive plant control techniques, revegetation, and ecological monitoring.
  • 3 + years’ experience in GPS/ GIS applications desired.
  • Scientific: Is knowledgeable about habitat conservation, native habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, and plant communities of the San Francisco area and able to identify native and invasive vegetation to species.
  • Quality: demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness. Strong organizational skills and enjoyment of detail-oriented work including data quality control and office management tasks, including meeting coordination, budget tracking, and administrative support.

  • Computer Skills: 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, Access PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Proficient in the use of GIS applications and GPS data collection. Knowledge of other spatial data programs a plus.
  • Knowledge of biological statistics and programs preferred.

  • Degrees and Certifications:
  • California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate a plus, ability and willingness to obtain required.
  • Chainsaw certification preferred, ability, and willingness to obtain required.
  • Section 10a1b permitting to handle listed species of the Golden Gate National Parks a plus, ability and willingness to obtain required.

  • Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
  • Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting.
  • Field work requires strenuous hiking in steep, off-trail field conditions in inclement weather.
  • Must be comfortable regularly working in dense poison oak and tick infested areas, including cutting poison oak.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, and positions objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
