Conservation Manager

The Conservation Manager supports the mission of the Tennessee Aquarium to connect people with nature and empower them to make informed decisions about water and wildlife. The primary responsibilities of this position are to oversee daily operations of the Conservation Institute facility and manage a team of conservation staff.  In addition, the Conservation Manager will expand the Tennessee Aquarium’s presence in the community and reputation as a trusted source of freshwater information by building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, conducting engagement efforts, and collaborating on conservation programs throughout the region. 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide key management and supervision for Conservation Institute team.
  2. Oversee daily operations for the Conservation Institute facility.
  3. Work closely with the VP of Conservation Science and Education to create, implement, and track strategic conservation plans aligned with the Aquarium’s larger strategic plan.
  4. Cultivate and maintain partnerships with other conservation organizations, community groups, and other stakeholders to develop and expand projects of mutual interest, including on-the-ground restoration work and educational outreach.
  5. Develop and implement effective engagement programs for key audiences, including community groups, nonprofit and government partners, and higher-grade school and university groups.
  6. Expand citizen science outreach in water quality monitoring by offering programs such as Georgia Adopt-A-Stream workshops or Project WET training.
  7. Organize and lead professional development for K-12 educators on watershed science, such as the week long River Teachers summer program.
  8. Work on cross-functional teams to develop and execute consistent conservation messaging and further the conservation impact of the Aquarium.
  9. Collaborate on grant projects to continue or expand conservation and freshwater science programs.
  10. Assist with record-keeping and reporting on conservation programs internally and to AZA.
  11. Evaluate the success of programs in reaching priorities and adjusts as needed.

 

 

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of eight years, or Master’s Degree with a minimum of five years, of work experience with progression in conservation science or a related field.
  • Minimum three years of experience managing a team.
  • GIS experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to research, synthesize data, and share this information to develop strong partnerships.
  • An effective team player who coordinates seamlessly with different departments at various levels within the organization.
  • Excellent management and leadership skills with the ability to present information to all levels of management in the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lead professional learning sessions for science teachers, biologists, or citizen scientists.
  • Proficient in MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to work independently and support multiple projects.
  • Ability to respond quickly to external opportunities, changing priorities, and tight deadlines.
