The Marine Education Center is run by people who share the common interest of developing programs, projects and exhibits related to the Village’s unique Marine environment.  Our facility now has multiple aquariums and a large touch tank stocked with animals from the Harbor. Admission is free. People of all ages are welcome. Information is suited to all age levels. Our mission is to develop and deliver marine educational programs for schools and the general public to foster hands-on learning about our local marine environment and marine resources.

Interns are the first people the public meet when entering the Marine Education Center.  You must be prepared to represent the Marine Education Center in a positive way.  Enthusiasm for the Marine Education Centers mission and an appreciation of the Long Island Sounds natural and cultural heritage are a definite plus.  This is a great positions for anyone interested in a career in education.  The objective of this internship is to provide hands-on experiences through interpretation and educational programs and to encourage a greater understanding of our natural resources and environmental stewardship.

Schedules will be 30 hours per week, Wednesday through Sunday but will vary in the length of work day and start time.

Job start date will begin in May 2018 and run through September 2018

Duties include but are not limited to:

- Interacting with the public by conducting natural tours.

- Assisting with educational programs for youth and camp groups.

- Assists in maintenance of saltwater aquarium and responsible for the care and feeding of marine life.

-Maintains daily cleanliness of Marine Education Center.

-Assisting in direction of volunteers.

-Assisting naturalist with daily specimen prep.

Motivated candidates will have the opportunity to assist in developing new projects in cooperation with the Naturalist.  The purpose of these projects will be to benefit the educational component for visitors of the center as well as local flora and fauna.  The intern will be able to help direct ideas for small projects as well as aiding predetermined ones.


Applicants must have the ability to perform the physical duties of the position including being able to work in all kinds of weather, over different types of terrain, and with ticks and other biting insects. Applicants must be able to work with minimal supervision, be very independent and easy-going, and be able to work with the public of all ages in a professional manner. The individual must enjoy and be comfortable working with people of varied backgrounds and ages in a variety of outdoor settings.  He/she must have the ability to translate knowledge of ecology and coastal issues into basic terms and engaging activities.  He/she must have an interest in teaching students of all ages.  Willingness and enthusiasm to work as a team member or independently in a variety of situations with diverse audiences is critical.  Professional appearance (while working outdoors) is required. Must be willing to work in hot and humid weather, which is common outdoors during coastal summers.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Able to use a computer.

- Ability and willingness to work with children and adults of all ages.

- Knowledge or willingness to learn the Long Island Sound marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

- Intern must be able to work independently and complete programs/projects successfully.

- Must be able to speak clearly and be comfortable with public speaking.

- Demonstrate positive teamwork skills and maintain clear verbal and written communication with staff.
