Environmental Youth Program Coordinator-Alaska

The Fairbanks Youth for Habitat Program has been improving local habitat and providing a unique experience for local youth since 2009. The program seeks to improve local wildlife habitats and provide local area youth with the skills and knowledge for continued partnerships in natural resource related activities that provide a benefit for critical habitat. The Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. The FSWCD has provided support and technical assistance for the Fairbanks Youth for Habitat program and now coordinates all aspects of the program. The FSWCD is seeking a candidate with experience in natural resource management and working with youth. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to supervise kids, show patience and good judgement and be able to fill a teacher/mentor role. Daily tasks are varied and inconsistent- sometimes requiring short-notice changes/substitutions. This position will begin in late April on a part-time basis and will switch to full time (40hrs per week) for May through September 2018. The rate of pay will be $15-17/hour DOE. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plan, organize, and coordinate all daily activities for groups up to 10, ages 13-15.

2. Plan and implement technical projects such as streambank restoration, green infrastructure, and other natural resource related enhancements.

3. Provide supervision and support for participating youth in all aspects of the program

4. Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

1. Able to use a variety of power and manual tools including saws, hammers, shovels, etc.

2. Must be independent, self-motivated and require little supervision for daily tasks

3. Adaptability and willingness to deal with unpredictability

4. Must be organized and flexible with the ability to multi-task

5. Excellent communication and problem solving skills are essential

6. Must show the ability to follow directions and follow through on all assigned tasks

7. Valid driver’s license and be able to pass a federal background check

Desired (but not required) Skills

1. Knowledgeable in stream bank restoration and revegetation techniques

2. Experience working with youth specifically related to natural resource management

3. Training in education and/or natural resource management

4. Familiarity with soil and water monitoring and testing

5. Knowledge of local environments, flora, and fauna and locally invasive species
