The College of Science at San José State University seeks a visionary, proactive leader and a strong advocate deeply committed to the sciences for its next dean.
Founded in 1857, San José State University is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast. San José State is located in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, and is the fifth largest of the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU) System, the largest 4-year university system in the United States. As one of the 200 top research universities in the nation, San José State has NSF and NIH-funded research programs, and has one of the highest levels of research funding in the CSU system. San Jose State also offers rigorous coursework to more than 35,000 undergraduate and Master’s-level students in seven colleges.
The College of Science is one of eight colleges within the university. The college has more than 300 faculty and staff and nearly 3,000 students. The college consists of nine academic units: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Computer Science; Geology; Mathematics & Statistics; Meteorology and Climate Science; Physics & Astronomy; the Science Education Program; and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. The COS offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in all of the sciences, as well as professional master’s degrees in medical product development management and biotechnology. Reporting to the provost, the dean of the College of Science provides leadership and advocates for the college’s departments and programs. Through collaborative and transparent leadership, the dean must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, and other senior administrators to define, articulate, and successfully implement an innovative and distinctive vision and plan for the college as it maintains its upward trajectory in scientific discovery and education. As a member of the Provost's Academic Affairs Leadership Team and the President’s Leadership Council, the dean works with the president, provost, other deans and senior administrators to accomplish the College of Science’s and University’s goals.
The incoming dean will have a strong record of accomplishment and a vision for the future of science research and education. Experience as an academic leader with a demonstrated track record of promoting faculty and research excellence will be important, as well as supporting a student-focused learning environment and innovation to improve student success. The dean fosters an academic community in which a diverse population models equity and inclusive excellence. The dean will have the ability to lead the development and articulation of a clear vision and engender support from internal and external constituents in implementing that vision. The dean will demonstrate the skills to build strong alliances and partnerships across the university and throughout the community to promote the goals of the COS. Experience with or strong potential for fundraising and ability to generate new revenue for the college is highly desirable.
