Post doctoral researcher
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The successful applicant will work on multiple ecological projects related to the conservation of endangered species. Specific projects the post-doc would engage in include:
(1) Landscape-scale assessments of resource selection by GPS-tagged individuals using LIDAR and other remotely sensed data;
(2) Demographic analyses of long-term datasets using, for example, mark-recapture and occupancy modeling approaches; and
(3) Development of statistically rigorous regional scale monitoring projects;
The post-doc would take the lead role on some projects and work collaboratively with current lab members on other analyses. The position is largely analytically focused and is based at UW Madison, but opportunities exist for conducting field work during the summer. The successful applicant is expected to lead-author at least one scientific article per year and support the publication of additional lab papers as a co-author.
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have a strong background in quantitative ecology, biostatistics, or a closely related discipline. A strong publishing record with a demonstrated ability to creatively apply quantitative approaches to answer ecological questions is required. Programming, GIS, and population analysis skills are also essential. Proficiency in the use of R for simulation analyses and Python for automating GIS analyses are preferred. The applicant must also have received their doctoral degree by the start date (see below).
The post-doc must be able to work both collaboratively within a dynamic team setting and independently on their own research projects. Effective communications skills and the ability to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders are essential, as is a recognition of the fluidity of applied conservation science.
APPOINTMENT AND SALARY: The position will be available August 1, 2017. The duration of the appointment is 2 years, with the possibility of a 3rd year pending funding levels. Salary will be $50,000 and the position includes health insurance.
