The Director of Science Education will apply current research in the areas of education, interpretation, and science to design and implement dynamic programs to help create a continuous pathway of learning that will also draw new and underrepresented audiences to the natural sciences.  The Director will also ensure the department's programs and initiatives are developed and executed in line with the Tennessee Aquarium mission, institutional priorities, and strategic plan, and provide staff with the training, support, and guidance needed to facilitate growth.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrate commitment to Tennessee Aquarium's vision, mission, and values, and provides a creative and innovative vision for staff.
  2. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of cutting-edge educational programming and outreach to bring aquatic science learning to students and teachers at the Aquarium, Conservation Institute, IMAX, and River Gorge Explorer, as well as both off-site and virtual venues.
  3. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the Education staff (eleven full-time, nineteen part-time, and fifty seasonal) while providing on-going opportunities for growth, development, and enrichment.
  4. Build new and strengthen partnerships in the community through participation in collaborative programs and outreach initiatives. Network with other formal and informal education organizations nationally to share and acquire additional knowledge for improvement of the department.
  5. Manage the budget for the the Education Department with earned revenue, and work with the Vice President of Conservation Science and Education to increase available resources through fundraising and grantwriting.
  6. Guide education volunteer programs towards high quality interactions in the galleries while examining opportunities for growth of volunteer programs; supervise 150 gallery volunteers.
  7. Oversee the care and use of the Education Animal Collection.
  8. Participate in aquarium-wide and cross-functional teams, projects, or meetings, particularly with the Conservation Institute. Maintain and grow an environment that empowers staff to contribute to a culture of cross-departmental collaboration.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Science or related field
  • Master's Degree in Education, Science, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years in management role in a team environment
  • Experience in budget management and departmental oversight
  • Proven success in an informal education setting
  • Understanding of recent research in informal learning and science education
  • Strong managerial/organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills

 

Full-time, Exempt; some weekend or evening work required.
